In 2005, he co-founded Loopt, a mobile app that allowed users to share their real-time location with friends. Although Loopt did not achieve massive commercial success, it was later acquired, marking Altman’s entry into the startup world. Altman gained wider recognition as the president of Y Combinator from 2014 to 2019. During his leadership, Y Combinator helped launch and support numerous successful startups, including Airbnb, Dropbox, and Stripe. His vision and mentorship made him one of the most influential figures in Silicon Valley. In 2015, Altman co-founded OpenAI with a mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.
