Sundar Pichai is an Indian-born American business executive and the chief executive officer of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary Google. He is widely recognized for his calm leadership style and his role in shaping some of the world’s most widely used technology products. He was born as Pichai Sundararajan on June 10, 1972, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, and grew up in Chennai. His early life was simple—he lived in a modest home where the family did not own a telephone for many years. Despite limited resources, Pichai showed exceptional memory and academic ability, especially in mathematics and science. One well-known detail from his childhood is his ability to remember every phone number he dialed. Pichai earned his undergraduate degree in metallurgical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He later moved to the United States, where he completed a master’s degree in materials science and engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from University of Pennsylvania. Before joining Google, Pichai worked at Applied Materials and McKinsey & Company. He joined Google in 2004 and initially worked on the Google Toolbar, a product that helped expand the use of Google Search. His leadership on the development of Google Chrome proved to be a turning point. Chrome became one of the most popular web browsers in the world, strengthening Google’s ecosystem. Over time, Pichai took responsibility for key products including Gmail, Google Maps, and Android. His ability to manage large-scale products and teams led to his appointment as CEO of Google in 2015. In 2019, he also became CEO of Alphabet Inc., overseeing the company’s broader vision and innovation strategy. Pichai’s journey—from a modest upbringing in India to leading one of the most powerful technology companies in the world—reflects persistence, discipline, and a deep understanding of technology. He is known for focusing on accessibility, innovation, and making technology useful for billions of people worldwide.
