Kyiv Strikes Expose Moscow Stance as Zelensky Heads to United States for Peace Talks
Ukraine woke to another bruising morning after a prolonged overnight assault on its capital, as Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv for nearly ten hours. At least two people were killed and dozens injured, while large parts of the city were left without electricity and heating in the depths of winter.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the scale and timing of the attack revealed the real position of the Kremlin on peace, just as he began a diplomatic journey that will take him to North America for talks aimed at ending the war.
Speaking through social media while travelling, Zelensky said the bombardment showed the true attitude of Vladimir Putin and his inner circle. According to the Ukrainian leader, the strikes made clear that diplomacy without firm security guarantees would not protect lives.
His comments came hours before he was due to meet Donald Trump in Florida, where a new American backed peace proposal is set to dominate discussions.
A Night of Relentless Attacks
What distinguished the latest assault on Kyiv was not simply the number of weapons launched but the duration of the attack. Air raid sirens sounded repeatedly through the night as waves of drones and missiles arrived in succession.
Ukrainian officials said nearly five hundred drones and around forty missiles were launched, many aimed at civilian and energy infrastructure.
Emergency services worked through the night and into the morning, pulling residents from damaged apartment blocks and extinguishing fires in residential and industrial areas.
Authorities confirmed that a woman was killed in one district while a seventy one year old man died in another, with his wife seriously injured.
At least thirty two others were hurt, though officials warned the figures could rise as rescue operations continued.
By morning, city officials said roughly a third of the capital was without heating or power.
With temperatures hovering just above freezing, engineers rushed to restore electricity to hundreds of thousands of homes.
Schools, hospitals and other critical facilities switched to backup power as emergency schedules were introduced to manage the strain on the grid.
Residents described a night of fear and exhaustion.
Many spent hours in shelters or underground stations, listening to the sound of explosions and air defence fire above them.
Some said the attack felt like a deliberate message timed to coincide with Zelensky’s trip abroad.
Voices From a Shaken City
In neighbourhoods hit by drones, residents gathered among shattered glass and scorched walls, trying to assess the damage.
Some expressed hope that international talks could finally bring relief, while others voiced deep scepticism.
One Kyiv resident told reporters that Russia only pretends to want peace, arguing that the continued strikes showed negotiations were merely for show.
A university student said he was tired of endless meetings held far from the battlefield, while ordinary people continued to suffer at home.
Another witness described watching a drone descend between buildings before crashing into the corner of a residential block.
These sentiments reflect a broader weariness across Ukraine as the war enters another winter.
For many in Kyiv, the loss of heat and power during the cold months has become a grim symbol of the conflict’s toll on daily life.
Zelensky Message to Allies
Zelensky moved quickly to frame the attack as a test for Ukraine’s partners.
In a detailed statement, he said that while Moscow might speak of diplomacy, its missiles and drones told a different story.
He warned that air defence supplies must be sufficient and timely, especially as Russia continues to target energy infrastructure.
Diplomacy will not work without security, he said, adding that pressure on Russia remained insufficient.
He urged the United States, Europe and other allies to use their full capabilities to protect Ukrainian lives and deter further attacks.
The Ukrainian president has repeatedly argued that any peace agreement must include robust guarantees to prevent renewed aggression.
The overnight strikes, he said, underscored the urgency of that demand.
The Road to Florida and Beyond
Zelensky’s journey comes at a critical diplomatic moment.
After a stopover in Canada to meet Prime Minister Mark Carney, he is due to hold calls with several European leaders before arriving in Florida for talks with Trump.
He is also expected to speak with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and other key allies.
Sunday’s meeting with Trump is expected to focus on a United States brokered peace framework that has been under discussion in recent weeks.
The plan, described by Ukrainian officials as nearly complete, outlines a pathway toward ending the war while addressing long standing security concerns.
Inside the Draft Peace Framework
According to Ukrainian officials, the draft proposal contains around twenty points and builds on earlier discussions between American and Ukrainian envoys, as well as contacts with Russian representatives.
Zelensky has described it as the main framework for ending the conflict.
A central element involves security guarantees from the United States, Nato partners and European allies.
These would commit them to a coordinated response if Russia were to invade Ukraine again in the future.
For Kyiv, such guarantees are essential after years of fighting and repeated attacks on civilian infrastructure.
The plan also addresses the sensitive issue of eastern Ukraine, including the Donbas region.
Zelensky has said one option under consideration is the creation of a free economic zone, though he stressed that Ukraine opposes a full withdrawal from its territory.
Any demilitarised or special zone would need to be carefully policed, with safeguards to prevent renewed hostilities.
Zelensky told reporters earlier this week that the plan was around ninety percent complete, with work continuing on the most delicate issues.
He said Ukraine’s task was to ensure that the framework was fully ready before any final decisions were made.
Mixed Signals From Moscow
While Ukraine and its partners discuss potential pathways to peace, the Kremlin has offered few public details about its own position.
Russian officials have confirmed that they are studying proposals brought back from talks with American representatives, but have declined to elaborate.
Kremlin spokespersons have said discussions should remain confidential, suggesting that revealing details too early could undermine negotiations.
At the same time, the intensity of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities has fuelled scepticism in Kyiv and beyond about Moscow’s willingness to compromise.
Ukrainian officials argue that the timing of the Kyiv strikes was no coincidence.
Rather, they say it was a calculated signal ahead of Zelensky’s talks with Trump.
The message, they add, is that Russia retains the ability to inflict widespread damage whenever it chooses.
A Winter of Uncertainty
As emergency crews continue to clear rubble in Kyiv, attention is turning once again to the harsh realities of winter warfare.
Damage to power plants and heating systems has become a recurring feature of Russian campaigns, placing enormous strain on civilians.
Ukrainian engineers have made significant progress in repairing infrastructure after previous attacks.
But each new barrage tests the resilience of the system.
For families without heat or electricity, the coming days will be especially difficult.
Despite the hardships, Ukrainian officials insist that morale remains strong.
They point to the rapid response of emergency services, the effectiveness of air defences in intercepting many incoming weapons, and the continued support of international partners.
A Defining Moment for Diplomacy
The coming days could prove decisive for efforts to end the war.
Zelensky’s meeting with Trump in Florida is being closely watched, not only in Kyiv and Moscow but across Europe and beyond.
Supporters of Ukraine hope the talks will produce clearer commitments on security guarantees and military support.
Critics question whether any agreement can hold without fundamental changes on the ground.
For Zelensky, the message he carries to his allies is shaped by the smoke still rising from damaged buildings in Kyiv.
The overnight strikes, he says, are evidence that peace cannot be built on words alone.
As Ukraine endures another winter night under threat, the challenge for diplomats is to translate proposals and promises into lasting security.
Whether the talks in North America can move that goal closer remains uncertain.
For the people of Kyiv, the stakes could not be higher.
