Bangladesh Seek T20 World Cup Match Relocation Amid Mustafizur Rahman Dispute
Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has come under renewed scrutiny after a political and sporting controversy involving Mustafizur Rahman prompted the Bangladesh Cricket Board to raise concerns over player safety in India. The board is now preparing to formally request the International Cricket Council to relocate Bangladesh’s World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka, citing the recent developments surrounding the Bangladeshi fast bowler’s release from the Indian Premier League.
The situation escalated following instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India that led to Mustafizur Rahman being released by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2026 IPL season. The decision has not only affected the player’s immediate professional prospects but has also triggered broader diplomatic and sporting questions about Bangladesh’s comfort level in touring India during a major global tournament.
Safety concerns raised after board meeting
According to officials, the Bangladesh Cricket Board held an emergency meeting of its directors over video conference on Saturday to assess the implications of Mustafizur’s removal from the IPL and its possible impact on the national team’s participation in the World Cup. Bangladesh are scheduled to play their first three T20 World Cup matches in Kolkata next month, with additional fixtures in Mumbai.
Following the meeting, the BCB media committee chairman Amzad Hussain confirmed that the board would write to the ICC to explain its position. He stated that recent events had raised legitimate concerns within the board regarding the security and well being of Bangladeshi players while in India, particularly in Kolkata, where tensions have been most visible.
Bangladesh’s sports adviser Asif Nazrul also weighed in publicly, expressing doubts about whether the team could feel safe under the current circumstances. In a post on his official Facebook page, Nazrul said he had instructed the BCB to present the entire matter to the ICC and formally request that Bangladesh’s World Cup matches be moved to Sri Lanka as an alternative host.
Nazrul argued that if a Bangladeshi cricketer could not continue playing in India despite having a valid contract with an IPL franchise, it would be unreasonable to expect the national team to feel secure during a high profile international event. He also revealed that he had asked Bangladesh’s information and broadcasting ministry to stop telecasting the IPL within the country, further underlining the seriousness with which the issue is being viewed at governmental level.
Mustafizur Rahman release sparks wider fallout
At the center of the controversy is Mustafizur Rahman, Bangladesh’s leading left arm fast bowler and one of the most experienced overseas players in franchise cricket. The 30 year old was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 9.20 crore during the IPL 2026 mini auction, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in the history of the tournament.
However, on January 3, KKR confirmed that they had released Mustafizur from their squad following instructions from the BCCI. In an official statement, the franchise said that the decision was taken after due consultations and in line with directions from the governing body. The BCCI also confirmed that KKR would be permitted to sign a replacement player under IPL regulations.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained that the move was linked to growing resentment in India over recent developments in Bangladesh, particularly concerns raised by Indian groups regarding the treatment of religious minorities. While the cricket board did not elaborate in detail, it referred to recent developments as the basis for its directive to the franchise.
The decision drew significant attention because of Mustafizur’s stature in international cricket and his strong recent form. He has played 60 IPL matches across multiple franchises including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. During his IPL career, he has taken 65 wickets at an average of 28.45 with an economy rate of 8.13.
Mustafizur was also enjoying an excellent run in the International League T20 during the 2025 26 season, where he picked up 15 wickets in eight matches. He is currently representing Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League and has already claimed six wickets in his first three matches of the season.
Speaking briefly after his release, Mustafizur offered a restrained reaction, saying, “What else can you do if you are dropped?” His comments reflected disappointment but also acceptance of a decision that was largely beyond his control.
Implications for the T20 World Cup
Bangladesh’s request to move their World Cup matches introduces a complex challenge for the ICC, which has already finalized schedules and venues for the tournament. Bangladesh are set to open their campaign against West Indies at Eden Gardens on February 7, a high profile fixture at one of India’s most iconic cricket venues.
Any relocation would require logistical adjustments, coordination with host boards and approval from other stakeholders. Sri Lanka has been mentioned as a potential alternative host due to its proximity, established infrastructure and history of hosting ICC events. The island nation has previously served as a neutral venue during periods of regional tension, most notably during parts of the Asia Cup and other bilateral series.
For the ICC, the issue goes beyond scheduling. It touches on the fundamental principles of player safety, neutrality and the separation of sport from political disputes. While international cricket has often been influenced by geopolitical realities, governing bodies traditionally seek to ensure that players can compete without fear or intimidation.
A complicated bilateral backdrop
The controversy also unfolds against a complicated backdrop in Bangladesh India cricket relations. Interestingly, just a day before the issue erupted, the BCB had announced its home international schedule for 2026, which includes white ball series against India that were postponed from 2025. That announcement suggested ongoing cricketing cooperation between the two boards.
The current dispute, however, highlights how quickly off field developments can strain sporting ties. Bangladesh officials have been careful not to frame their request as a political protest, instead emphasizing safety and fairness as their primary concerns. Nevertheless, the involvement of government advisers and the call to halt IPL broadcasts indicate that the matter has crossed beyond purely cricketing boundaries.
What comes next
The ICC is expected to receive formal communication from the Bangladesh Cricket Board in the coming days. It remains to be seen how the global governing body will respond and whether it will consider altering venues so close to the start of the tournament.
For Bangladesh, the focus remains on ensuring that their players can participate in the World Cup in an environment where they feel secure and respected. For Mustafizur Rahman, the immediate chapter with the IPL has closed, but his performances in other leagues continue to reinforce his value as one of Bangladesh’s most important fast bowlers.
As the countdown to the T20 World Cup continues, the episode serves as a reminder of the delicate balance international sport must maintain amid political sensitivities. The decisions taken in the coming weeks will not only shape Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign but may also set precedents for how cricket’s governing bodies navigate similar challenges in the future.
