iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max expected in 2026 with major design, chip and camera upgrades

Apple may still be several months away from officially unveiling its next Pro iPhones, but early leaks are already offering a fairly detailed picture of what the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could bring when they arrive in 2026. Industry reports and supply chain sources suggest that these models could mark one of the most meaningful upgrades to the Pro lineup in recent years, combining a refreshed front design, notable camera hardware changes and a major shift in chip engineering.

While nothing has been confirmed by Apple, the volume and consistency of recent information indicate that the company is preparing for a transition year for its premium smartphones. From under display Face ID to a new generation chipset built on advanced manufacturing technology, the iPhone 18 Pro series appears positioned as more than a routine annual update.

One of the most discussed changes concerns the front of the device. According to reports attributed to industry insiders and publications tracking Apple’s supply chain, the company is working to move Face ID components under the display on both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. If this approach is finalized, it would allow Apple to eliminate the pill shaped cutout that has defined recent generations.

Instead, the front camera is said to shift to a small hole positioned near the top left corner of the screen. This would result in a more uninterrupted display surface, a design direction that several Android flagships have already adopted. For Apple, such a move would represent a significant visual change, even if the overall body design remains familiar.

Leaks suggest that the chassis and materials introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro series will largely carry over, meaning users can expect the same premium feel and refined build quality. Under the hood, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to debut Apple’s next generation A20 Pro chipset. This processor is widely reported to be built on TSMC’s upcoming 2 nanometre manufacturing process, marking another milestone in Apple’s custom silicon roadmap.

Beyond the smaller process size, Apple is reportedly planning to adopt TSMC’s Wafer Level Multi Chip Module technology. With this approach, memory would be integrated directly onto the same wafer as the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine, rather than being packaged separately.

This tighter integration could deliver several benefits. Performance gains of around 15 percent and efficiency improvements of up to 30 percent have been suggested compared to the previous generation. It may also improve thermal management and free up internal space, which Apple could use for either a larger battery or improved cooling solutions.

Such changes would also strengthen on device artificial intelligence features under Apple Intelligence, an area the company is expected to push aggressively in 2026.

Battery capacity is another area where noticeable changes may arrive, particularly with the Pro Max variant. Leaks suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be slightly thicker than its predecessor, allowing Apple to fit a larger battery inside.

The capacity is tipped to reach around 5100mAh, which would be a significant step up for an iPhone. This increase, combined with the efficiency gains from the A20 Pro chip, could translate into longer real world battery life. What remains uncertain is the final treatment of the Dynamic Island. Some sources claim Apple will remove it entirely in favour of a pinhole only design, while others suggest a slimmer version could coexist with under display Face ID improvements.
