Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1 rolls out with Pixel features and performance upgrades
Google has officially begun testing Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1, marking the start of the final quarterly platform release in the Android 16 cycle.
This update follows the recent Android 16 QPR2 stable rollout delivered through the December Pixel Drop and gives Pixel users an early preview of what is expected to arrive publicly in March 2026.
The beta is available for Pixel 6 and newer devices, including the latest Pixel 10 series, Pixel Fold models, and the Pixel Tablet.
As with previous quarterly releases, QPR3 focuses on refining the Pixel experience with practical improvements rather than introducing sweeping design changes.
Performance and system updates
One of the most notable changes in Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1 is a long awaited GPU driver update for the Pixel 10 series.
The PowerVR GPU driver has been upgraded from version 1.602.400 to 1.634.2906.
This update is expected to improve graphics performance and stability, particularly in demanding games such as Genshin Impact, where users previously reported performance issues.
Google has also introduced a fix aimed at developers and advanced users who rely on wireless ADB.
With this beta, wireless debugging can automatically reconnect when the device joins a trusted network, removing the need to repeatedly re enable the feature after periods of inactivity.
User experience refinements
Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1 brings several quality of life enhancements across the interface.
Folder open and close animations have been refined to feel smoother, while the Edit tiles screen in Quick Settings has received subtle adjustments for better usability.
A new option allows users to change the order of navigation buttons in the three button navigation mode.
This setting lets Pixel users swap the positions of the back and recents buttons, offering a layout similar to what many users are familiar with on Samsung devices.
Another practical addition is adjustable flashlight brightness.
Instead of a simple on off toggle, the flashlight tile now includes a brightness slider that visually represents light intensity, giving users more control in everyday situations.
The update also allows users to remove the At a Glance widget from the home screen, offering greater customization.
Changes to the Always On Display behavior further refine how information is shown when the screen is idle.
Privacy and connectivity features
Privacy visibility has been improved with an expandable location indicator in the status bar.
Tapping this indicator opens a panel showing exactly which apps are accessing location data in real time.
Android 16 QPR3 also builds on external display support.
After introducing external display screen recording earlier in the Android 16 cycle, Google now allows users to cast the contents of an external display, expanding productivity and presentation use cases.
Availability and installation
Eligible Pixel devices can join the Android Beta Program to receive the update over the air.
Manual installation is also possible through official OTA images provided by Google, though users should note that returning to the stable channel requires a factory reset.
While Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1 is not intended for everyone, it offers a clear look at the final refinements Google is preparing for Pixel users ahead of the March 2026 release.
