Yo Yo Honey Singh and Jacqueline Fernandez Set to Light Up WPL 2026 Opening Ceremony
The Women’s Premier League 2026 is set to begin with a grand cultural spectacle as renowned rapper and music producer Yo Yo Honey Singh and popular Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez headline the opening ceremony in Navi Mumbai.
The fourth season of the league will officially get underway on January 9 at the DY Patil Stadium, marking a vibrant start to one of the most prominent tournaments in women’s cricket.
The announcement was confirmed by the Women's Premier League governing body through its official social media channels.
According to the organisers, Yo Yo Honey Singh will take centre stage during the pre match entertainment segment, setting the tone for what promises to be an electrifying season of cricket and celebration.
Jacqueline Fernandez will also deliver a special performance that highlights confidence, courage and the growing influence of women in sport.
Opening Ceremony to Celebrate Sport and Entertainment
The WPL opening ceremony has quickly become a signature event, blending top tier sporting competition with mainstream entertainment.
This year’s edition is expected to continue that tradition, with performances designed to reflect both the competitive spirit of the league and its broader cultural significance.
In its statement, the league emphasised that the opening day celebrations go beyond music and dance.
The pre match ceremony is intended to honour the rise of women’s sport in India and globally, showcasing how the WPL has emerged as a powerful platform for talent, visibility and inspiration.
Jacqueline Fernandez’s performance, in particular, has been positioned as a tribute to women athletes and their journey in professional sport.
Blockbuster Clash to Open the Season
On the field, the tournament will begin with a high profile encounter between defending champions Mumbai Indians and 2024 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
The clash at DY Patil Stadium is expected to draw significant attention, as it brings together two of the most successful and popular franchises in the league’s short history.
Mumbai Indians have established themselves as a dominant force, having won two titles in the first three seasons.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru, meanwhile, lifted their maiden trophy in 2024 and will be keen to assert themselves early in the new campaign.
Two Venues, 22 Matches Across India
The 2026 season will feature a total of 22 matches played across two venues.
Navi Mumbai will host the opening leg of the tournament, with 11 matches scheduled at DY Patil Stadium.
This includes afternoon double headers on January 10 and January 17, offering fans an opportunity to enjoy extended days of cricket.
The league will then move to Vadodara, where the remaining 11 matches will be held at the Kotambi Stadium.
This venue will host key fixtures, including the Eliminator on February 2 and the final on February 5.
Weekday Final Marks a First
In a first for the Women’s Premier League, the 2026 final will be played on a weekday.
The title clash is scheduled for Thursday, February 5.
The decision has been taken to avoid a scheduling clash with the men’s T20 World Cup, which begins later that week in India and Sri Lanka.
Tournament officials believe this move will help maintain viewership focus on the WPL finale while ensuring logistical smoothness for broadcasters and stakeholders.
The men’s T20 World Cup is set to start on February 7, with Pakistan facing the Netherlands in Colombo.
January February Window Introduced
Another significant change this season is the scheduling window.
The 2026 edition will be the first time the WPL is staged in a January to February period.
The previous three seasons were held in February and March, often overlapping with international fixtures and preparations for the Indian Premier League.
By shifting the tournament earlier in the calendar, organisers aim to reduce clashes with international commitments and provide players with a more balanced season.
The move is also expected to benefit teams in terms of preparation and fan engagement.
Format Remains Unchanged
Despite the changes in scheduling and venues, the tournament format remains the same.
Five teams will compete in a double round robin league, with each side playing the others twice.
The teams participating this season are Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz.
At the end of the league stage, the team finishing at the top of the table will qualify directly for the final.
The second and third placed teams will face off in the Eliminator, with the winner earning the remaining spot in the title match.
A Look at Past Performances
Mumbai Indians have been the most successful franchise so far, winning two championships in three seasons.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru broke through in 2024 with their first title.
Delhi Capitals, despite consistent performances, have finished as runners up in all three previous editions.
Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz are still searching for their first final appearance and will be eager to change that narrative in 2026.
Packed Calendar for Indian Women’s Cricket
The conclusion of the WPL will be followed closely by international action.
Ten days after the final, the Indian women’s team is scheduled to begin a comprehensive tour of Australia.
The tour will include three T20 Internationals, three One Day Internationals and a Test match, running from February 15 to March 9.
This tight schedule highlights the growing demands on elite women cricketers, while also underlining the importance of the WPL as a key preparatory platform ahead of major international assignments.
A Growing Festival of Women’s Sport
With star performers, high stakes matches and an expanding fan base, the Women’s Premier League continues to strengthen its position in the global sporting calendar.
The presence of leading entertainment figures at the opening ceremony reflects the league’s ambition to position itself not just as a cricket tournament, but as a broader cultural event.
As WPL 2026 gets underway in Navi Mumbai, the combination of cricketing excellence and high profile entertainment is expected to deliver a memorable start to the season, reinforcing the league’s role in shaping the future of women’s cricket in India and beyond.
