Who Was Claudio Neves Valente, the Suspected Brown University Shooter

Authorities in the United States have confirmed that Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, the man suspected in the deadly shooting at Brown University and the killing of an MIT professor, was found dead on December 18 in Salem, New Hampshire. Investigators say the 48 year old died from a self inflicted gunshot wound, bringing a dramatic but unsettling close to a case that has shaken academic communities across the country.

Providence police formally identified Valente during a press conference on Thursday. He had been the subject of an intensive multi state manhunt following the mass shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island earlier this month, an attack that killed two students and injured nine others. Days later, the investigation expanded after the fatal shooting of Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno FG Loureiro in Brookline, raising concerns that the two incidents could be connected.

Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed that Valente previously studied at the university from the fall of 2000 to the spring of 2001. During that time, he was enrolled as a PhD student in physics and had access to the Barus and Holley engineering building, the site of the recent shooting. University officials emphasized that Valente had no current affiliation with Brown and had not been associated with the institution for more than two decades.

Police said Valente’s last known address was in Miami, Florida. Investigators revealed that he had changed vehicle license plates multiple times, using plates linked to both Florida and Maine, which complicated efforts to locate him. A key breakthrough came after public tips helped authorities trace a vehicle connected to the suspect to a car rental facility in Massachusetts. Evidence recovered from that vehicle matched material found at the Brown University crime scene.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha confirmed that Valente was found with a satchel and two firearms when his body was discovered. FBI Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks stated that while the suspect is deceased, the investigation remains active, with many questions still unanswered.

Federal authorities have now confirmed a link between the Brown University shooting and the killing of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, reversing earlier indications that the cases might be unrelated. Both men shared ties to Portugal and to physics, having studied at the same Portuguese engineering institution earlier in their lives.

MIT described Loureiro as a highly respected faculty member in nuclear science and engineering and physics, as well as the director of its Plasma Science and Fusion Center. He joined the MIT faculty in 2016 and was widely regarded for his academic contributions.

Investigators have stated that Valente acted alone and that there is no evidence suggesting the attacks were motivated by antisemitism. While a definitive motive has not yet been established, authorities continue to piece together Valente’s background and movements in the days leading up to the shootings.

The tragedy has left lasting grief across multiple campuses, highlighting ongoing concerns about violence, campus security, and the lasting impact of unresolved personal grievances.
