Maharashtra Civic Body Election Results 2026 LIVE: BJP Led Mahayuti Maintains Early Lead as Counting Continues Across State

Vote counting underway for Maharashtra civic elections showing early trends in BMC Mumbai, Pune and Thane

The counting of votes for the Maharashtra civic body elections began on Friday morning, drawing statewide attention to early trends emerging from key urban centres including Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Akola. With nearly half of eligible voters participating across 29 municipal corporations, the results are being closely watched for their implications on urban governance, political alliances and future electoral strategies. Initial trends indicate that the BJP led Mahayuti alliance has established a lead in several regions, while opposition alliances remain competitive in select pockets, especially in Mumbai’s high stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election.

As India’s richest civic body and a symbol of political influence in Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation remains the centre of national attention. The contest has also been shaped by the reunion of the Thackeray cousins and the continued consolidation of the BJP Shiv Sena alliance under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s leadership. With counting underway and margins fluctuating, the unfolding results reflect a dynamic and closely contested urban political landscape.

Statewide Counting Begins With High Stakes Across 29 Municipal Corporations

Vote counting commenced at 10 am on January 16 across Maharashtra, with elaborate arrangements made to ensure transparency and security. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation confirmed that 23 returning officers were appointed for the 227 wards in Mumbai alone. Strong rooms and counting centres were equipped with CCTV surveillance, medical facilities, fire safety systems and coordinated police deployment.

Municipal Commissioner and District Election Officer Bhushan Gagrani stated that all operational measures were finalised in advance to ensure a smooth and timely counting process. Authorities also coordinated with the Public Works Department and Police Department to prevent law and order disruptions during the day.

Across the state, early trends began emerging within the first hour of counting, providing a preliminary snapshot of party performance in major urban centres.

BJP Led Mahayuti Takes Early Lead Across Maharashtra

According to early trend data, the BJP led Mahayuti alliance has taken the lead in approximately 370 wards statewide. Within this tally, the Bharatiya Janata Party is ahead in around 297 wards, while Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde is leading in 73 wards.

These numbers reinforce exit poll projections by agencies including Axis My India, JVC and Sakal, which had forecast a sweeping advantage for the BJP led alliance in major civic corporations. However, election officials and analysts have cautioned that early trends often shift as counting progresses across multiple rounds.

The Mahayuti alliance has already secured a head start even before counting began. On January 2, the final day for withdrawal of nominations, 68 candidates were elected unopposed. Of these, 66 seats went to the BJP Shiv Sena coalition and two to Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party faction. The highest number of unopposed victories was recorded in the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation, where 21 Mahayuti candidates were declared elected without contest.

Mumbai BMC Remains Closely Contested

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election continues to dominate public attention due to its political and financial significance. Early leads show a neck and neck battle between the BJP and Shiv Sena UBT factions.

At around 10.37 am, the BJP was leading in 30 wards while Shiv Sena UBT held an edge in 25 wards. Alliance arithmetic, however, shows a different picture. Shiv Sena UBT’s partner Maharashtra Navnirman Sena was leading in just three wards, while BJP ally Shiv Sena Shinde faction was ahead in 10 wards.

By 10.27 am, combined trends showed the Thackeray alliance leading in 26 wards, while the BJP Shiv Sena alliance was ahead in 34 wards. Earlier at 10.15 am, the BJP Shiv Sena coalition led in 15 wards compared to 10 for the Thackeray camp, highlighting the fluid nature of early counting.

Exit polls had projected a strong showing for the ruling alliance in Mumbai. An aggregate of six exit polls predicted the BJP Shiv Sena alliance could secure around 132 seats, while the Shiv Sena UBT led bloc may receive approximately 63 seats and Congress around 20 seats. However, officials and analysts continue to caution that exit polls do not always reflect final outcomes.

Thackeray Reunion Adds Political Weight to Mumbai Contest

The reunion of Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray after nearly two decades added a dramatic political dimension to the BMC election. The two leaders campaigned together with the stated objective of reclaiming political ground in Mumbai and countering the Mahayuti alliance.

In an editorial published in Shiv Sena UBT’s mouthpiece Saamana, the party claimed that the united Thackeray front represented a broader resistance movement in Maharashtra. The editorial argued that despite public claims of confidence by rival factions, internal anxieties were evident within the ruling alliance.

Campaign messaging from the Thackeray alliance focused heavily on Marathi identity and regional pride. According to Axis My India exit poll data, the Shiv Sena UBT MNS alliance was projected to receive a significant share of Marathi speaker votes, estimated at nearly 49 percent. However, the same polls suggested that voters from North Indian, South Indian, Gujarati and Rajasthani communities largely favoured the BJP led alliance.

Pune Shows BJP Advantage in Early Trends

In Pune, another politically significant urban centre, early trends indicate a strong showing by the Bharatiya Janata Party. As of 11.03 am, BJP candidates were leading in 48 of the city’s 165 wards. Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party faction was ahead in 14 wards.

Exit polls had earlier projected that the BJP would emerge as the largest party in the Pune Municipal Corporation. Estimates suggested BJP could win around 70 seats, while Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction might secure approximately 55. Sharad Pawar’s NCP was projected to gain around 10 seats, and Shiv Sena, which contested independently in Pune, was expected to win about 12 seats.

These projections, while indicative of voter sentiment, remain subject to verification as counting continues.

Thane Reflects Competitive Alliance Dynamics

Thane, considered a stronghold of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has produced interesting early trends within the ruling alliance itself. As of 11.07 am, Shiv Sena Shinde faction was leading in 14 of the city’s 131 wards, marginally ahead of ally BJP, which was leading in 12 wards.

This internal competition reflects the evolving balance of influence between coalition partners in urban regions. Political observers note that performance in civic polls often shapes negotiations over leadership roles and policy priorities in municipal governance.

Close Contest Between BJP and Congress in Akola

In Akola, early trends indicate a tightly contested battle between the BJP and Congress. At around 11.05 am, BJP candidates were leading in 15 wards, while Congress was ahead in 14 wards.

This near parity highlights the continued relevance of Congress in select urban pockets despite broader challenges faced by the party at the state level. Final results in such closely fought regions are expected to depend on narrow margins and late counting rounds.

Voter Turnout Shows Mixed Trends Across Cities

Voter participation varied significantly across Maharashtra’s municipal corporations. Mumbai recorded a turnout of 52.94 percent, marking a decline from 55.28 percent in 2017 but remaining higher than the 44.75 percent recorded in 2012.

Within Mumbai, ward level data showed stark contrasts. Suburban Bhandup’s ward number 114 recorded the highest turnout at 64.53 percent, while ward number 227 in Colaba reported the lowest turnout at 20.88 percent.

Across the state, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation recorded the highest turnout among major cities at 59.82 percent. Pimpri Chinchwad followed with 57.71 percent, Navi Mumbai with 57.15 percent and Vasai Virar with 57.12 percent. Thane recorded 55.59 percent turnout, Pune 52.42 percent, Nagpur 51 percent, Mira Bhayander 48.64 percent and Kalyan Dombivli 45 percent.

Nashik witnessed a notable decline, with turnout falling to 56.67 percent from 61.60 percent in 2017. Pune also saw a drop of approximately 3.5 percent compared to the previous election cycle.

Allegations and Responses During Polling Phase

The election process was marked by controversy following allegations from the Thackeray camp regarding the use of marker pens instead of traditional indelible ink. Raj Thackeray claimed that the ink used on voters’ fingers could be easily wiped off using sanitiser, raising concerns about electoral integrity.

Uddhav Thackeray described the issue as an erosion of democratic trust, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the Election Commission of undermining public confidence. He stated on social media that alleged irregularities amounted to an attack on democratic processes.

The State Election Commission rejected these claims, maintaining that standard procedures were followed during voting and that safeguards remained in place to prevent malpractice.

Exit Polls Highlight Demographic Voting Patterns

Data from Axis My India exit polls provided insight into voting behaviour across demographic groups. According to the findings, the BJP led alliance received stronger support among women voters and younger age groups between 18 and 60 years.

The BJP Shiv Sena coalition also dominated among North Indian, South Indian, Gujarati and Rajasthani communities, while the Shiv Sena UBT led alliance performed better among Marathi, Muslim and Christian voters.

While exit poll data offers a broad overview of trends, election analysts continue to stress that final outcomes depend on ground level vote counting and constituency specific dynamics.

What the Results Mean for Maharashtra Politics

The Maharashtra civic body elections are widely viewed as a barometer of urban political sentiment ahead of future assembly and parliamentary contests. Control over municipal corporations not only determines local governance but also provides parties with organisational networks and financial leverage.

For the BJP led Mahayuti alliance, strong performance would reinforce its dominance in Maharashtra’s urban centres and strengthen the leadership position of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. For the Thackeray camp, the BMC outcome carries symbolic importance linked to legacy, identity politics and the party’s historical association with Mumbai’s civic administration.

As counting continues throughout the day, attention remains focused on Mumbai, Pune and Thane, where final tallies are expected to shape the narrative of Maharashtra’s evolving political landscape.

With phased counting raising concerns about delays, officials have assured timely updates and transparent processes. The coming hours will determine whether early trends solidify into decisive mandates or narrow victories, marking the next chapter in Maharashtra’s civic and political history.
