The IPL 2026 mini auction takes place today in Abu Dhabi, marking another important chapter in the league’s evolving auction strategy. A total of 359 players have been shortlisted for the auction, but only 77 slots are available across all franchises. This sharp imbalance ensures that competition will be fierce, with the majority of registered players expected to remain unsold by the end of the day.

Australian all rounder Cameron Green is the most talked about name entering the auction room. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball, combined with his age and international experience, makes him one of the most valuable T20 assets currently available. Several teams with large purses are expected to push hard for his signature.

While bidding for Green could cross the Rs 25 crore mark inside the auction hall, his actual take home salary will be capped at Rs 18 crore. This is due to the IPL maximum fee rule for overseas players in mini auctions. Any amount bid above the cap will be deducted from the franchise purse and redirected to the BCCI, not the player. This rule adds a layer of strategy, allowing teams to outbid rivals symbolically while knowing the financial outcome in advance.

This year’s mini auction features 42 sets, covering capped players, uncapped Indians, and overseas specialists. There are no marquee sets, meaning high profile players are spread across early groups rather than showcased separately. Of the 359 players, 244 are Indian and 115 are overseas. However, overseas players are competing for just 31 slots, while Indian players are fighting for 46. Statistically, an overseas player has a higher chance of being picked, but competition remains intense due to limited overseas slots per team.

One of the most striking features of the IPL 2026 auction is its strong tilt towards youth. More than one third of the players are aged 23 or younger, highlighting how franchises continue to invest in long term development rather than short term fixes.

At the same time, experience has not disappeared. The auction pool includes players across four generations, ranging from teenagers born in 2007 to veterans approaching 40. Kolkata Knight Riders enter the auction with the largest purse among all franchises. With Rs 64.30 crore available and only 12 players retained, KKR have 13 slots to fill, including six overseas positions. This gives them unmatched flexibility to chase premium players early while still preserving funds for depth picks later.

Their auction approach is expected to combine one or two headline buys with a broader rebuild focused on balance and squad versatility.

Chennai Super Kings arrive with Rs 43.40 crore in their purse and nine slots available. After finishing at the bottom of the points table in the 2025 season, CSK are expected to prioritize squad restructuring. Key focus areas include overseas pace bowling and identifying long term replacements in the all round department.

With four overseas slots still open, CSK have the room to make one major overseas signing while also strengthening their Indian bench.

Mumbai Indians face the most constrained situation, entering the auction with only Rs 2.75 crore remaining to fill five slots. Their focus is likely to remain on low base price Indian players who can provide backup options without stretching the purse.

Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants all arrive with clearly defined needs rather than room for experimentation. For these teams, auction success will depend more on role clarity and timing than aggressive bidding.

One of the most important rules impacting this auction is the absence of the Right To Match card. Teams cannot reclaim previously released players by matching the final bid. If a franchise wants a former player back, it must compete openly and finish as the highest bidder.

This rule increases pressure on teams during bidding and prevents late auction corrections, making every early decision more consequential.
