Apple is reportedly testing a 200 megapixel periscope telephoto camera for future iPhone models, according to a new claim from known tipster Digital Chat Station. If accurate, the move would mark one of the biggest camera hardware upgrades in iPhone history and could significantly improve long range zoom photography.

The leak suggests Apple is evaluating a high resolution periscope lens system, but the feature is not expected to arrive in the upcoming iPhone 18 series or the iPhone 19 lineup that could follow in 2027. Early indications instead point to a possible launch window in 2028, meaning the technology may still be in internal development stages.

The reported sensor would focus on the telephoto camera, the lens used for optical zoom and distant subject photography. A 200 megapixel periscope telephoto system could allow Apple to deliver sharper zoom images, stronger detail retention, and more flexibility when cropping photos without losing clarity.
