ISRO LVM3 Records Nine Perfect Launches, Strengthening India’s Heavy Lift Capability

India’s space programme marked another defining moment on Wednesday morning as the Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched the LVM3 M6 mission from Sriharikota.

With this flight, the Launch Vehicle Mark 3 has completed nine missions and achieved a flawless success rate, reinforcing its status as one of the most reliable heavy lift launch vehicles operating today.

The mission not only demonstrated technical excellence but also underscored India’s growing role in the global commercial space market.

Carrying the United States based BlueBird Block 2 communication satellite, the launch showcased the LVM3’s ability to handle complex and demanding payloads with precision.

A Powerful Morning at Sriharikota

At precisely 8.55 am, the LVM3 lifted off from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

The ascent was smooth and closely monitored by teams at ISRO’s mission control.

Around fifteen minutes after liftoff, the BlueBird Block 2 satellite separated from the rocket and was successfully placed into its intended low Earth orbit at an altitude of approximately 520 kilometres.

ISRO Chairman Dr V Narayanan confirmed that the satellite was injected into orbit with exceptional accuracy and minimal disturbance.

He described the mission as a major milestone, noting that it marked the first dedicated commercial launch by LVM3 for a customer from the United States, AST SpaceMobile.

According to Dr Narayanan, this flight was also the 104th launch conducted from Sriharikota, highlighting the consistency and maturity of India’s launch infrastructure over the decades.

Heaviest Satellite Ever Launched from Indian Soil

One of the most remarkable aspects of the LVM3 M6 mission was the payload itself.

The BlueBird Block 2 satellite is the heaviest satellite ever launched from Indian soil using an indigenous launch vehicle.

Successfully placing such a massive spacecraft into orbit reflects the robust design and high thrust capability of the LVM3.

ISRO officials emphasised that the mission ranks among the best performances by any launch vehicle globally in recent times.

To date, India has successfully launched 434 satellites belonging to 34 countries, positioning ISRO as a trusted and competitive player in the global space launch market.

Nine Missions and a Perfect Record

With the success of LVM3 M6, the launch vehicle has now completed nine missions, all of them successful.

Its earlier flights include landmark missions such as Chandrayaan 2 and Chandrayaan 3, which played a crucial role in advancing India’s lunar exploration programme.

The vehicle has also carried multiple OneWeb missions, deploying a total of 72 satellites, as well as the CMS 03 satellite.

The previous LVM3 mission, LVM3 M5 carrying CMS 03, was completed successfully on November 2, just last month.

The short interval between these two launches highlights ISRO’s growing ability to conduct back to back missions with speed and efficiency.

Dr Narayanan described the achievement as historic, pointing out that this was the first time LVM3 had flown two missions within a span of 52 days.

Such rapid turnaround is a clear indicator of improved production, integration and launch readiness capabilities.

Confidence Boost for the Gaganyaan Programme

Beyond commercial and scientific achievements, the consistent success of LVM3 carries significant implications for India’s human spaceflight ambitions.

The vehicle has been selected as the launch system for the Gaganyaan programme, which aims to send Indian astronauts into space.

Speaking after the launch, the ISRO Chairman said that the flawless performance of LVM3 provides strong confidence for future crewed missions.

Designed for Heavy Lift Excellence

The Launch Vehicle Mark 3 is a three stage launch system engineered specifically for heavy lift missions.

It comprises two large solid strap on motors known as S200, a liquid core stage designated L110, and a cryogenic upper stage called C25.

Weighing around 640 tonnes and standing 43.5 metres tall, the LVM3 is currently India’s most powerful operational launch vehicle.

It is capable of carrying payloads of up to 4,200 kilograms to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit, making it suitable for advanced communication satellites, deep space missions and crewed spacecraft.

The S200 solid motors are among the largest solid boosters in the world, each containing about 204 tonnes of solid propellant.

These boosters provide the immense thrust required during the initial phase of flight.

The L110 liquid core stage uses a twin engine configuration and carries around 115 tonnes of liquid propellant, offering controlled and sustained thrust during ascent.

The final stage, C25, is powered by the fully indigenous high thrust cryogenic engine CE20.

With a propellant loading of about 28 tonnes, this stage plays a critical role in precise orbital insertion, particularly for complex and high energy missions.

Strengthening India’s Global Space Standing

The success of the LVM3 M6 mission comes at a time when competition in the global space launch market is intensifying.

By delivering consistent results, ISRO is reinforcing its reputation as a dependable and cost effective launch service provider.
