IPL 2026 Auction Live Updates Cameron Green Becomes Costliest Overseas Buy as Franchises Complete Squad Overhaul in Abu Dhabi
The IPL 2026 auction delivered one of the most eventful and high stakes days in the history of the league as all ten franchises gathered at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi to rebuild and fine tune their squads for the upcoming season. With 369 players available and only 77 slots to be filled, the auction witnessed intense bidding wars, strategic restraint and a noticeable shift toward long term planning by several teams.
The biggest moment of the day belonged to Kolkata Knight Riders, who signed Australian all rounder Cameron Green for a record Rs 25.20 crore. The signing made Green the most expensive overseas player in IPL auction history, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Mitchell Starc. Although IPL regulations cap the take home salary of overseas players at Rs 18 crore, KKR’s aggressive bid reflected their determination to build a powerful and versatile squad. Entering the auction with the highest purse of Rs 64.30 crore, KKR made full use of their financial strength and completed their squad early.
KKR further strengthened their lineup by acquiring Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana for Rs 18 crore, adding significant pace and death bowling expertise. The franchise also signed Mustafizur Rahman for Rs 9.20 crore, Finn Allen for Rs 2 crore, Tim Seifert for Rs 1.50 crore and several uncapped players at base prices, signaling a balanced mix of experience and youth.
Sunrisers Hyderabad emerged as another major spender during the accelerated auction rounds. England all rounder Liam Livingstone, who surprisingly went unsold in the initial rounds, was later recalled and sparked a bidding contest before SRH secured him for Rs 13 crore. The signing added explosive middle order firepower and part time bowling options to the Hyderabad side. SRH also invested in young uncapped players, underlining their focus on depth and flexibility.
Chennai Super Kings adopted a noticeably different approach compared to previous seasons. Known for backing experienced and established players, CSK shifted their focus toward younger talent in the 2026 auction. The franchise made headlines by signing uncapped wicketkeeper batter Kartik Sharma for Rs 14.20 crore and all rounder Prashant Veer for the same amount, making both among the most expensive uncapped players in IPL history. CSK also added Auqib Nabi for Rs 8.40 crore and Rahul Chahar for Rs 5.20 crore, indicating a clear intent to invest in long term assets while reshaping their squad for the future.
Delhi Capitals focused on smart and steady acquisitions rather than headline grabbing bids. The franchise secured experienced names such as David Miller for Rs 2 crore and Ben Duckett for Rs 2 crore, along with pace options like Lungi Ngidi. Their auction strategy emphasized balance across departments without overspending.
Rajasthan Royals continued their preference for youth and domestic talent. They brought back Ravi Bishnoi for Rs 7.20 crore and filled several slots with uncapped players at economical prices. The Royals’ approach reflected confidence in player development and squad continuity rather than major reshuffling.
Lucknow Super Giants strengthened their squad with calculated buys including Josh Inglis for Rs 8.60 crore and Wanindu Hasaranga for Rs 2 crore. Mumbai Indians, entering the auction with the smallest purse, remained conservative and focused on low cost additions to complement their settled core group.
The accelerated auction phase played a decisive role in finalizing squads. Once teams had filled most of their slots, bidding moved quickly, and many well known players including Prithvi Shaw, Devon Conway, Jonny Bairstow and Glenn Maxwell remained unsold. These outcomes highlighted how team combinations, overseas limits and budget constraints shaped decision making more than individual reputation.
By the end of the auction, teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings had completed their 25 member squads, while others filled their remaining slots shortly afterward. The auction reflected a broader trend toward youth investment, flexible all rounders and financial discipline under the revised player salary rules.
The IPL 2026 season is scheduled to be played from March 26 to May 31, following the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. With record breaking signings, strategic shifts and renewed emphasis on long term squad building, the auction has laid the foundation for a highly competitive and closely contested IPL season ahead.
