Too many chats? WhatsApp is bringing AI summaries for unread messages with privacy focused protection

WhatsApp is working on a new artificial intelligence feature designed to help users manage large volumes of unread messages more easily. The upcoming tool will allow people to generate summaries of multiple unread chats at once, offering a faster way to catch up on conversations across personal chats, work groups and family threads.

The feature is being developed with Meta’s Private Processing system, which the company says is built to protect user privacy while AI handles message summaries. If introduced widely, the update could become one of WhatsApp’s most practical AI additions so far, especially for users who regularly deal with dozens of unread notifications.

Many users open WhatsApp after a few hours away only to find long lists of unread messages. Group chats, office discussions, event planning and family conversations can quickly pile up, making it difficult to know where to begin.

WhatsApp’s new summarisation feature is intended to solve that problem. Instead of opening chats one by one and scrolling through every message, users will be able to request a quick summary of multiple unread conversations in a single view.

The summary is expected to highlight the most important updates from each chat, helping users understand what happened in seconds rather than spending several minutes reading through threads.

According to available details, a new option is expected to appear in the inbox area where unread chats are listed. Once selected, WhatsApp would generate a concise overview covering those unread conversations.

This means users may no longer need to manually open each individual thread. Instead, they could receive a short explanation of key points, pending discussions, plans or shared updates across several chats at the same time.

WhatsApp has already tested AI summaries for individual conversations in some versions of the app. This new tool appears to expand that idea by combining several unread chats into one broader summary.

The biggest concern around AI message summaries is privacy. To address that, Meta is building the feature on what it calls Private Processing.

The system reportedly uses a Trusted Execution Environment, often known as TEE. This type of secure environment is designed to isolate sensitive processing tasks from outside access.
