Apple iPhone 18 tipped for major performance leap with 12GB RAM and 2nm A20 chip, launch timeline may shift to 2027

Apple’s next standard iPhone could arrive with one of the biggest internal upgrades in the company’s recent smartphone history. Fresh reports suggest the upcoming iPhone 18 may feature 12GB of RAM and a next generation A20 processor built on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process, signalling a sharp focus on speed, efficiency and artificial intelligence features.

While Apple has not officially confirmed any details, multiple leaks now indicate that the company may be planning a significant change to both hardware strategy and launch timing for its mainstream iPhone lineup.

According to the latest industry chatter, Apple may equip the standard iPhone 18 with 12GB of RAM. If accurate, this would mark the highest memory capacity ever introduced on a non Pro iPhone.

Apple previously moved its iPhone 17 Pro models to 12GB RAM, while earlier generations largely remained at lower capacities. Bringing that specification to the standard iPhone 18 would narrow the gap between regular and premium variants.

The increase in RAM is expected to help with multitasking, faster app switching and future software demands. It may also play a major role in Apple’s expanding artificial intelligence ambitions.

One of the strongest reasons behind the reported memory boost could be Apple Intelligence, the company’s growing suite of AI powered tools and features.

Apple is widely expected to unveil new Siri upgrades and broader AI capabilities during WWDC 2026 in June. These tools may require stronger on device processing and larger memory resources to run efficiently.

If Apple plans to bring more AI functions directly to standard iPhones, increasing RAM to 12GB would be a logical step. It would also improve long term device performance as software becomes more demanding over time.

The report also claims Apple has secured TSMC’s 2nm chip production capacity for the A20 processor expected inside the iPhone 18 series.

This would be a major generational leap in semiconductor design. Smaller process nodes usually allow more transistors in the same space, helping improve speed while reducing power usage.

Early expectations suggest the A20 chip could deliver around 15 percent better processing performance compared with the previous generation, while maintaining strong battery efficiency.

If those gains prove accurate, users could see faster gaming, smoother camera processing, quicker AI tasks and better thermal performance.

In another surprising development, leaks suggest Apple may not release the standard iPhone 18 in late 2026 as many expected.

Instead, the company could shift to a staggered launch model, with the regular iPhone 18 potentially arriving in early or spring 2027 alongside devices such as the iPhone 18e and a second generation iPhone Air.

Reports say Apple is reviewing launch schedules to reduce pressure on supply chains and manage component costs, especially amid recent memory chip shortages.

If true, Apple’s traditional September cycle may increasingly be reserved for premium models, while other variants launch later in the year or the following spring.

Despite possible delays, the iPhone 18 is still expected to bring noticeable display improvements.

Leaks point to a 6.3 inch LTPO OLED screen with ProMotion support and a 120Hz refresh rate. That would be another major upgrade for standard iPhone buyers, offering smoother scrolling, better animations and more responsive gameplay.

The device may also receive a smaller Dynamic Island design, reportedly around 35 percent smaller than the previous generation. A reduced cutout could provide a cleaner front look and slightly more usable display area.

Externally, reports indicate Apple may keep a similar physical footprint to the iPhone 17, meaning users can expect familiar dimensions with refined internal upgrades.

Apple is also tipped to simplify the Camera Control button introduced in earlier models.

Current versions reportedly use both capacitive and pressure sensing technology. The iPhone 18 could move to a pressure only system, potentially reducing manufacturing complexity and cost while retaining key camera shortcuts.

For selfies and video calls, the phone may gain a 24 megapixel Centre Stage front camera. That would be a step up from the previous 18 megapixel sensor and could improve detail, video framing and low light performance.

Adding to the unusual timeline, Apple is also said to be preparing its first foldable iPhone this year. The device has been linked to names such as iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra.

If Apple launches a foldable model before the standard iPhone 18, it would mark a historic shift in the company’s product roadmap and show a broader push into premium hardware categories.

Even though the device remains unofficial, the reported specifications suggest Apple wants the standard iPhone lineup to become more capable rather than simply more affordable.

A move to 12GB RAM, 2nm silicon, 120Hz display technology and stronger front cameras would make the iPhone 18 one of the most meaningful mainstream upgrades in years.

It would also signal that features once reserved for Pro devices are slowly moving into the core lineup, giving more buyers access to premium technology.
