Hyderabad Police Caution Public Against Fake Traffic Challan Payment Messages
The cyber crime wing of the Hyderabad police has issued a strong advisory warning citizens about a growing number of fraud cases linked to fake electronic traffic challan payment messages circulating on mobile phones.
Authorities say cybercriminals are increasingly using SMS and WhatsApp to trick vehicle owners into believing that they have unpaid traffic penalties, pushing them to make immediate payments through fraudulent links.
According to officials, these messages are carefully crafted to appear authentic and often mimic the design, language, and layout of genuine government portals.
This makes it difficult for ordinary users to distinguish between real and fake payment requests, increasing the risk of financial loss and data theft.
How the Scam Operates
Cyber crime officials explained that fraudsters typically send messages claiming that a traffic challan is pending against the recipient’s vehicle.
The message usually creates a sense of urgency, warning that failure to pay immediately could result in additional penalties, legal action, or suspension of vehicle related services.
Once the recipient clicks on the link provided in the message, they are redirected to a fake website that closely resembles an official government traffic challan portal.
The site prompts users to enter their vehicle registration number.
After this step, a challan amount is displayed, giving the impression that the information is legitimate and retrieved from official records.
When victims proceed to make the payment, they may unknowingly install malicious software on their mobile devices.
In other cases, users are asked to enter sensitive banking details such as card numbers, UPI information, or login credentials.
This can lead to unauthorized bank transactions, complete compromise of mobile phones, or long term misuse of personal and financial data.
Serious Financial and Privacy Risks
The Hyderabad police cyber crime wing stressed that these scams can have severe consequences beyond immediate monetary loss.
Once malicious software is installed, fraudsters may gain ongoing access to the victim’s device.
This allows them to intercept messages, steal one time passwords, monitor banking activity, and even take control of social media or email accounts.
Officials noted that many victims realize something is wrong only after noticing unauthorized deductions from their bank accounts or suspicious activity on their phones.
In some cases, the damage continues for days before it is detected, making recovery more difficult.
Official Advice to Citizens
To protect themselves, the cyber crime police have urged citizens to follow strict digital safety practices.
Traffic challan payments should be made only through official government websites or recognized applications.
Authorities clearly stated that government departments do not send payment links through WhatsApp, personal SMS messages, or social media platforms.
Citizens have been advised to avoid clicking on links received from unknown or suspicious sources, even if the message appears urgent or official.
The police emphasized that no government agency will ask for sensitive information such as OTPs, UPI PINs, debit or credit card details, or banking passwords through links or messages.
People are also encouraged to download mobile applications only from official app stores and to avoid installing files or apps suggested through unsolicited messages.
Keeping mobile phones updated with the latest security patches and using reliable antivirus software can further reduce the risk of cyber attacks.
What to Do If You Become a Victim
The Hyderabad police outlined clear steps for individuals who suspect they may have fallen victim to a cyber fraud.
Victims should immediately disconnect their mobile data or Wi Fi connection to prevent further unauthorized access.
They should then contact their bank without delay to block cards, freeze accounts, or stop ongoing transactions.
The police have also urged victims to dial the national cyber fraud helpline number one nine three zero as soon as possible.
Complaints should be registered on the official cyber crime reporting portal to ensure timely investigation and recovery efforts.
In addition, victims are encouraged to approach the nearest cyber crime police station with all available details, including screenshots, message content, transaction records, and phone numbers used by the fraudsters.
Rising Concern Over Digital Fraud
Officials acknowledged that the increasing reliance on digital services has also led to a rise in sophisticated cyber scams.
Fraudsters constantly adapt their methods to exploit public trust in online government systems.
Fake challan payment scams are part of a broader trend that includes phishing emails, fraudulent investment schemes, and impersonation of banks or government agencies.
The cyber crime wing reiterated that public awareness remains the most effective defense against such fraud.
Citizens are advised to remain cautious, verify information through official sources, and report suspicious messages immediately.
By staying alert and informed, users can significantly reduce the risk of falling prey to cybercriminals.
The Hyderabad police continue to monitor these scams closely and are working to identify and take action against those involved.
Authorities have assured the public that strict legal action will be taken against offenders, while also emphasizing the shared responsibility of maintaining digital safety in an increasingly connected world.
