In the early hours of December 25, a container truck collided with a private sleeper bus on National Highway 48 near Hiriyur in Chitradurga district. The impact triggered a massive fire, engulfing the bus that was travelling from Bengaluru to Gokarna via Shivamogga.

The vehicle was carrying 32 passengers along with two crew members at the time of the crash.

Passengers Trapped as Fire Spread

According to preliminary information, several passengers were trapped inside the bus as flames spread rapidly following the collision.

Some managed to escape by jumping out in the moments after the crash, but others were unable to get out in time, leading to a tragic loss of life.

Emergency services rushed to the spot and initiated rescue and relief operations.

State Government Announces Compensation and Orders Probe

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced financial assistance for the victims’ families and the injured.

In a statement shared on X, he said that an ex gratia amount of ₹5 lakh would be provided to the families of each deceased person. Those injured in the accident would receive ₹50,000 each.

The Chief Minister said he had sought a detailed report from district and transport officials and instructed them to ensure that all possible support is extended to the victims and their families.

He also ordered an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.

Chief Minister Expresses Anguish

Expressing deep anguish, Siddaramaiah described the incident as heartbreaking.

He said that news of passengers being burnt alive in such a horrific accident had left people shaken across the state.

Condolences from State Leaders

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar also conveyed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

In a post on X, he said he prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and expressed hope that such tragedies would not be repeated.

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H D Kumaraswamy said he was deeply shocked by the accident.

He offered condolences to the bereaved families and urged the Karnataka government to ensure proper and timely medical treatment for all those injured.

Transport Department Action

Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said senior transport officials had been directed to visit the accident site.

He said the Transport Commissioner Yogeshwar and Assistant Commissioner Omkareshwari were asked to conduct a spot inspection, assess the situation on the ground, and submit a detailed report.

Prime Minister Announces Relief from PM Fund

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in the accident and announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

He said an ex gratia amount of ₹2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of each deceased person, while the injured would receive ₹50,000 each.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he was saddened by the tragedy and extended his condolences to the affected families.

He also wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured in the crash.

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences.

In a message shared on X, she said she was deeply pained by the tragic bus fire incident in Chitradurga district that resulted in the loss of lives.

The accident occurred on a busy stretch of National Highway 48 near Hiriyur, a key route connecting several parts of central Karnataka.

The private sleeper bus had departed from Bengaluru and was en route to the coastal town of Gokarna, passing through Shivamogga.
