Apple Set to Deliver Its Most Ambitious iPhone Upgrade in Years as iPhone 18 Pro Max Promises Smaller Dynamic Island, Variable Aperture Camera and a Massive Battery Boost

According to leaked specifications, Apple is planning to move more Face ID components beneath the display, allowing the pill-shaped cutout to shrink from approximately 20.76mm on the current iPhone 17 Pro Max down to around 13.49mm. That represents a reduction of close to 35 percent, which would make the front display feel considerably more immersive. Display dimensions themselves are expected to hold steady at 6.9 inches for the Pro Max variant, though Apple is also rumoured to introduce upgraded LTPO Plus display technology aimed at improving power efficiency.

Perhaps the most technically ambitious change involves Apple's decision to replace the Qualcomm modem with its own in-house C2 chip. Beyond delivering improved power efficiency and reduced thermal output, the C2 modem is expected to support 5G NR-NTN, which stands for New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks. In practical terms, this means the iPhone 18 Pro Max could automatically switch to satellite connectivity whenever cellular signals become weak or unavailable. This would mark a significant evolution beyond the current emergency SOS via satellite feature, potentially offering a far more seamless and everyday-useful connectivity experience for users in remote or underserved areas.

Photography enthusiasts have long wished for greater manual control on iPhones, and Apple appears ready to finally deliver. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to retain its triple 48-megapixel rear camera system while introducing a variable aperture mechanism on the main sensor.
