Champion review finds ambition falling short of impact
The Telugu period drama Champion, written and directed by Pradeep Advaitham, arrives with a compelling idea and an earnest heart. Set against a turbulent chapter of history, the film follows a young footballer whose personal dreams collide with a larger struggle for dignity and survival. While the premise promises emotional depth and narrative power, the final result delivers only in fragments, never fully realising the scope of its ambition.
A coming-of-age story framed by history
At its core, Champion is a coming of age story. Sports provide the framework, but the real journey is about identity, conscience and belonging. The protagonist Michael Williams, played by Roshan Meka, dreams of migrating to England to pursue his football career. His path is shaped by events unfolding in the backdrop of the Bhairanpally revolt, a time when Hyderabad had not yet merged with newly independent India after August 1947. The setting offers fertile ground for a story that could weave personal aspiration with collective resistance.
Historical backdrop and moral awakening
History records Bhairanpally in Telangana as a village that revolted fiercely against the Razakars, the private militia of the Nizam, and endured severe brutality. The film imagines how this volatile environment alters the life of a carefree young athlete who has grown up insulated from political realities. Michael begins as someone focused solely on his future abroad, detached from the land and people around him. An unexpected turn of events draws him into the heart of conflict, forcing him to question not only his ambitions but also his responsibilities.
Technical strengths and aesthetic identity
Technically, Champion is often impressive. Cinematographer Madhie crafts sepia toned visuals that lend the film a muted, period appropriate texture. The production design by Thota Tharani and Prakeerthi Uppalapati recreates the era with restraint rather than spectacle, while Chandrakant Sonawane’s costumes ground the characters in their social realities.
Mickey J Meyer’s music, blending jazz influences with rustic undertones, complements the film’s mood and lends it an understated charm. These elements give Champion a distinct aesthetic identity even when the storytelling falters.
An uneven narrative trajectory
The narrative, however, takes time to find its rhythm. Early portions focus on Michael’s sporting life in Secunderabad, a city known for its Anglo Indian heritage. He plays for a team called the Secunderabad Blues, and his family runs an English style bar and restaurant.
Brief appearances by familiar actors such as Kovai Sarala and Vennela Kishore establish his sheltered upbringing and cosmopolitan environment. At first, the sports arc appears familiar, with Michael facing an arrogant rival who threatens his chances of being selected to play in England.
When personal and political worlds collide
As the story broadens, personal and political threads begin to intersect. A subplot involving a father branded a traitor adds emotional weight, while Michael’s declaration that he does not belong where he is hints at his inner conflict. The trajectory of his transformation is not difficult to anticipate. He is a man who must eventually recognise that he cannot turn away from injustice when those around him are suffering.
Bhairanpally and the film’s strongest moments
The film gains momentum when Michael is forced to travel to Bhairanpally. The dusty village, scarred by violence and fear, stands in stark contrast to his earlier world. Here, survival takes precedence over dreams of sport. Football becomes a distant privilege, irrelevant in the face of immediate danger.
These sequences offer the film its strongest material, as the daily struggles of the villagers lend emotional texture to the narrative.
Character portrayals and performances
The village characters are more nuanced than the forces arrayed against them. The Razakars, the Hyderabad police and representatives of the Nizam are portrayed in broad strokes, lacking complexity. In contrast, the villagers are depicted with a sense of quiet resilience.
Anaswara Rajan, making her Telugu debut as Chandrakala, a village playwright and director, brings warmth and conviction to her role. Her performance, including her own dubbing, stands out as one of the film’s highlights.
A transformation that lacks emotional weight
Michael’s transformation unfolds gradually. He initially plans to leave the village as soon as his vintage truck is repaired, biding his time and keeping his distance. The unhurried pace of these segments is not inherently problematic.
What weakens the impact is the writing, which rarely probes beneath the surface. The small incidents meant to accumulate into a powerful turning point lack emotional punch, making it difficult for viewers to fully invest in either Michael’s football dreams or the villagers’ plight.
Underused ensemble and missed opportunities
The film boasts an ensemble of seasoned actors, including Prakash Raj, Murali Sharma, Archana, Ravindra Vijay, Ranvir Shorey, Kay Kay Menon and Nandamuri Kalyan Chakravarthy. Unfortunately, many of them are underused, their characters lost in the crowded narrative.
Ravindra Vijay’s role as a journalist who rises above religious divisions is a notable exception, offering a moment of clarity and moral purpose, though even this thread does not resonate as strongly as it could.
Roshan Meka’s promise and limitations
Roshan Meka commands attention with his screen presence and shows clear promise as a leading actor. His physicality suits the role of a sportsman, and he conveys sincerity in quieter moments. Yet his dialogue delivery and emotional modulation need refinement, especially during scenes that demand greater intensity.
The film seems torn between developing Michael as a symbol of awakening conscience and positioning Roshan as a rising star, resulting in a lack of focus.
A climax that falls short
A cameo at a crucial juncture, intended to mark Michael’s decisive change, fails to deliver the intended impact. Despite a lengthy runtime of 169 minutes, the film does not explore its many facets with sufficient depth.
The balance between personal story and historical context remains uneven, leaving several themes only partially examined.
Final assessment
One sequence that truly stands out is the depiction of a battle near the village watch tower. Here, the film captures the grit and determination of ordinary people standing up to overwhelming odds. The staging and emotional clarity of this segment hint at what Champion could have achieved more consistently.
In the end, Champion is an earnest film driven by a strong idea and sincere intent. Its blend of history, sport and personal transformation has the potential to be powerful, but uneven writing and a lack of narrative sharpness hold it back. While it offers moments of visual beauty and emotional insight, it never fully takes flight. For viewers interested in period dramas with social themes, Champion is worth a watch, though it remains a reminder that ambition alone is not enough without the craft to sustain it.
