Karnataka Bus Fire on NH 48 Claims Five Lives as Minister Points to Impact Near Fuel Tank

A tragic road accident on National Highway 48 in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district early on December 25 left five people dead after a private luxury sleeper bus caught fire following a collision with a container truck.

Initial findings suggest that the blaze erupted because the truck struck the bus near its diesel fuel tank, causing the vehicle to be rapidly engulfed in flames.

Accident near Hiriyur on busy highway corridor

The accident occurred near Hiriyur, a key stretch along the busy Bengaluru Gokarna highway corridor.

The bus was travelling from Bengaluru to the coastal town of Gokarna when the incident took place in the early hours of the morning.

According to authorities, the impact was severe and left little time for passengers inside the bus to escape.

Initial assessment by the Transport Department

Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said preliminary investigations by local police indicate that the collision happened close to the bus’s fuel tank, triggering the fire almost immediately.

“The initial investigation has revealed that the truck hit the bus exactly near the diesel tank. This appears to be the primary reason for the fire,” Mr Reddy said while speaking to reporters on December 25.

He added that a more detailed investigation would be conducted to establish the precise sequence of events leading to the accident.

Truck crossed median before collision

Officials confirmed that the container truck crossed the median and rammed into the oncoming bus.

The sudden impact and proximity to the fuel tank resulted in flames spreading quickly through the sleeper coach, trapping several passengers inside.

Casualties and survivors

Five people lost their lives in the accident, most of them reportedly dying due to burns sustained inside the bus.

The intensity of the fire made rescue efforts extremely difficult in the initial moments after the collision.

The bus driver and his assistant managed to escape from the vehicle despite the flames.

However, the truck driver was among those who died in the accident.

Emergency services reached the spot soon after and worked to douse the fire and recover the victims.

Local residents and highway users also assisted rescue teams before police and fire personnel secured the area.

Truck driver likely at fault

Based on early findings, the Transport Minister said there was no fault on the part of the bus driver.

According to investigators, the container truck appears to have veered across the median into the opposite lane.

“The manner in which the truck came from the other side suggests the truck driver may have been driving rashly or could have fallen asleep at the wheel, especially since the accident happened late at night,” Mr Reddy said.

Factors under investigation

Authorities are examining factors such as driver fatigue, speed, and visibility conditions at the time of the crash.

Statements from witnesses and surviving crew members are also being recorded as part of the inquiry.

Safety of the bus under scrutiny

Responding to concerns about the safety of private sleeper buses, Mr Reddy clarified that the vehicle involved in the accident was compliant with all regulatory requirements.

“We have checked the documents of the bus. The permit, insurance, and driver licence are all valid. The bus was otherwise safe,” he said.

The minister noted that the fire was not due to any mechanical failure or lack of safety equipment, but rather the specific nature and location of the impact.

Senior officials directed to inspect site

The Karnataka government has ordered a detailed on site inspection to assess the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Transport Commissioner Yogeshwar and Assistant Transport Commissioner Omkareshwari have been instructed to visit the accident location, conduct a spot inspection, and submit a comprehensive report to the state government.

“We broadly know the cause, but we will carry out an in depth investigation to understand every aspect of what happened,” Mr Reddy said.

Rising concern over highway accidents

The incident has once again brought attention to a series of serious road accidents reported across India in recent months, many involving buses and heavy vehicles during night time travel.

Mr Reddy acknowledged public concern but said that in this particular case, the cause appeared clear based on preliminary evidence.

“The collision itself and the way the truck crossed into the opposite lane point to negligence on the part of the truck driver,” he said.

Ongoing safety efforts

He also highlighted ongoing efforts by the Transport Department and police to improve road safety.

According to the minister, regular awareness programmes are being conducted for both bus and truck drivers, with special emphasis on the dangers of rash driving, over speeding, and fatigue during long overnight journeys.

Safety measures after previous tragedies

Following a deadly accident in October in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, where a Bengaluru bound private sleeper bus crash claimed 19 lives, the Karnataka government had issued a circular mandating stricter safety norms for passenger buses.

These measures include the provision of an additional emergency exit door, increased number of fire extinguishers, and enhanced safety checks for both private and state run buses.

Transport officials said compliance with these measures is being monitored through inspections and audits.

Investigation continues

Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation, including a technical examination of both vehicles involved.

CCTV footage from nearby toll plazas and highway cameras is also being reviewed to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision.

As families of the victims mourn their loss, authorities have reiterated the need for greater caution and accountability on India’s highways, especially during night time travel when the risk of fatigue related accidents is higher.

The state government has assured that responsibility will be fixed once the investigation is complete and that further steps will be taken to strengthen road safety and prevent such tragedies in the future.
