Apple Unveils $549 AirPods Max 2 With Stronger Noise Cancellation and New Intelligent Features

Apple on Monday introduced the AirPods Max 2 , a new version of its premium over-ear headphones priced at $549, bringing improved active noise cancellation, upgraded audio performance, and a suite of intelligent features previously limited to the company’s AirPods Pro line.

The announcement follows a series of product launches from Apple earlier this month, including the iPhone 17E and MacBook Neo, as the company continues to expand its hardware lineup ahead of the next product cycle. The new AirPods Max 2 will be available for pre-order starting March 25 and are expected to begin shipping early next month.

The AirPods Max 2 represent the latest update to Apple’s most expensive AirPods model, which sits at the top of the company’s wireless headphone range. Apple last refreshed the AirPods Max in September 2024, when it replaced the Lightning port with USB-C and later introduced lossless audio and ultra-low latency support through a firmware update.

With the new generation, Apple says the headphones deliver up to 1.5 times more effective active noise cancellation compared with the previous model.

The improvement is powered by a combination of new audio algorithms and Apple’s H2 chip , which handles Bluetooth connectivity and audio processing. The same chip has already been used in newer AirPods models to enable advanced sound features and intelligent audio adjustments.

Beyond noise cancellation, Apple is positioning the AirPods Max 2 as a step forward in sound quality.

The headphones include a new high dynamic range amplifier, designed to enhance overall audio performance. Like the previous USB-C model, the AirPods Max 2 also support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio when connected through a USB-C cable.

The AirPods Max 2 introduce additional interaction features designed to expand how users control their devices.

One new function allows users to press the Digital Crown to trigger the camera on a connected device, enabling them to take a photo or start and stop video recording remotely.

The headphones also add gesture-based Siri interactions, allowing users to respond privately to voice prompts. Users can nod their head to confirm a command or shake their head to decline, offering a hands-free way to interact with Apple’s voice assistant.

Apple said the AirPods Max 2 will retail for $549, matching the launch price of the original AirPods Max.

Pre-orders will open on March 25, with shipments scheduled to begin early next month.

The headphones will be available in five color options:

The launch highlights Apple’s continued focus on strengthening the AirPods ecosystem, which has become a key part of the company’s broader hardware strategy.
