Meta to Remove End to End Encryption From Instagram Direct Messages After May 2026

Meta has announced that it will discontinue its end to end encryption feature for Instagram direct messages, marking a significant change to how private conversations are handled on the platform. According to an update on the company’s support page, the optional encrypted messaging feature will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.

The company has also begun notifying users through alerts inside the Instagram app about the upcoming removal. End to end encrypted messaging on Instagram allowed conversations and calls to remain inaccessible to outside parties, including Meta itself, unless participants chose to share them.

The move signals a shift in Meta’s approach to privacy features on Instagram and could reshape how users think about the security of their private messages on one of the world’s largest social media platforms.

End to end encryption is widely considered one of the strongest forms of digital communication security. When enabled, only the people involved in a conversation can read or listen to the messages exchanged. Even the platform hosting the conversation cannot access the content.

Meta had introduced end to end encryption for Instagram messages as an optional feature, meaning both users in a conversation needed to enable it for it to work.

However, the company says adoption remained extremely limited. Meta spokesperson Dina El Kassaby Luce told The Verge that the feature is being discontinued because “very few people” were using it.

The change comes amid broader global debates about encrypted messaging and the balance between user privacy and safety enforcement online. However, the company has acknowledged that even services offering encryption are not completely immune to potential intrusions or external pressures.
